The Conversation We’re Not Having About Cancer

by Paula Black

Have you ever noticed how people buy lottery tickets, hoping they’ll beat impossible odds?

Now consider this: according to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men in the United States will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.

Those are not distant odds. They are personal.

So here’s the question that changed my life: If the risk is that high, why aren’t we talking more about prevention? Why aren’t we talking more about how we can create a body designed to resist cancer? Why don’t we understand what cancer is?

When Fear Makes Decisions

When I was diagnosed and given 3–6 months to live, fear tried to rush me into immediate action: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation — the standard path was laid out clearly.

By divine intervention, my husband and I paused. We began to research. We prayed. We asked questions.

I’m not against doctors. I’m grateful for dedicated medical professionals. But I realized something important:

No one would care more about my body than I would.

But I needed to understand how it actually worked.

The Conversation We Rarely Have

Most appointments focus on treating disease. But how often do we discuss:

  • What is cancer?

  • What strengthens the immune system?

  • What weakens it?

  • How stress affects cellular health?

  • How nutrition fuels healing?

  • How toxins burden the body?

And we are rarely taught how much influence and control we truly have.

Your immune system identifies and removes abnormal cells every day. Cancer cells can form in anyone — and do. But a strong immune system typically eliminates cancer cells before they multiply enough to cause a diagnosis.

So the real issue becomes: What has overwhelmed our God-designed immune system — and how do we restore it? Or how can we prevent it from ever becoming that vulnerable?

God’s Design Still Functions

Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by renewing our minds.

The world often says:

  • Disease is random.

  • Decline is inevitable.

  • Your only hope is aggressive intervention.

  • You have little control.

But the body God created is intelligent. It has repair systems. It responds to nourishment. It responds to rest. It responds to peace.

Healing is not mystical. It is bringing and keeping the body in agreement with God’s design.

When we align with how the body was designed to function — physically, emotionally, and spiritually — change begins. And healing takes place.

Responsibility Without Shame

Accepting responsibility is not the same as blaming yourself.

It simply means recognizing that you have authority and power over your health moving forward.

You can:

  • Strengthen your immune system

  • Improve nutrition

  • Reduce toxic exposure

  • Lower chronic stress

  • Renew your thinking

  • Invite God fully into the process

No one else can steward your body for you.

When I understood that, fear began to lose its grip.

What Happened to Me

I chose to support my immune system naturally instead of further attacking my body with chemo and radiation.

I changed my nutrition. I reduced toxins. I learned to manage stress. I brought my faith into every decision.

My body responded.

That was 25 years ago.

I do not live in fear of cancer returning because I understand what my body needs to remain strong.

I do not live in fear of cancer returning because I already learned how to reverse it successfully.

Knowledge replaced panic. Truth replaced fear.

You Are Not Powerless

If you have been diagnosed, take a deep breath.

You do not need to be a statistic. You are not abandoned. You are not without options.

Fear urges us to act quickly. Wisdom invites us to learn first.

Research. Ask questions. Self-educate. Strengthen your immune system. Strengthen your faith. Even small changes begin shifting direction.

An Invitation

If you want to understand more about the body–soul–spirit approach to healing, I share my full story and the principles that guided me in my book: Life, Cancer and God.

And if you are walking through cancer right now, you don’t have to do it alone. Through Winning Over Cancer coaching, I work with people who are ready to:

  • Understand what’s happening in their bodies

  • Create a clear, personalized plan of action

  • Strengthen their immune systems

  • Grow spiritually stronger in the process

I have seen hope return. I have seen fear lose its grip. I have seen people step into confidence instead of panic. I have seen health return.

God is good. He heals. He leads us into truth through blending the practical laws of health with the supernatural laws of faith.

Healing is not about chasing a miracle — it is about aligning with an intelligent and God-given design.

Standing in faith with you,

Paula
