Your Body is Always Listening: 7 Things to Support Healing
Updated: Oct 7

When I was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I suddenly found myself in a world I never expected to enter.
There were decisions to make, information to sort through, and plenty of reasons to be afraid. But one of the most important shifts in my thinking came when I stopped looking only at what was happening to my body and began asking:
What can I do to help my body do what God designed it to do?
That question changed so much for me.
I began learning about nutrition, toxins, stress, rest, emotions, thoughts, and the remarkable systems God placed within the human body. But I also learned something even more important: I am not simply a body.
Neither are you.
God created us as whole people—body, soul, and spirit. Supporting healing isn't necessarily about finding one miracle food, supplement, treatment, or protocol. It's about creating an environment in which your whole person can thrive.
Whether you're facing cancer, another health challenge, or simply want to live healthier, here are seven things you can begin doing today.
1. Give Your Body Real Nourishment
Food provides the raw materials your body uses every day to repair, produce energy, and support your immune system.
You don't have to change everything overnight. Begin by asking, "Is this giving my body something it can use?"
Choose more whole foods, vegetables, and foods close to the way God created them. Think of healthy eating not as punishment or deprivation, but as stewardship.
"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you..." —1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV
Caring for our bodies isn't worshiping them. It's appreciating the remarkable gift God has entrusted to us. It is our responsibility to steward the health of our body.
2. Give Your Body Water—and Reduce Its Burden
Our bodies depend on water for virtually every system to function properly. Start simply by drinking plenty of clean, pure water.
Then look at what you can reasonably reduce in your environment. What are you putting on your skin? Breathing? Using in your home? What chemicals can you do without?
We cannot live in an entirely toxin-free world. The goal isn't fear—it's simply reducing unnecessary burdens where we can.
Small changes made consistently can create a very different lifestyle over time.
3. Move the Body God Gave You
Movement doesn't require an elaborate exercise program.
Walk. Stretch. Garden. Strengthen your muscles. Get outside, feel the sunshine, breathe deeply—and perhaps turn your walk into time with God.
Our bodies were designed to move. They were designed for sun, for oxygen and things the outdoors gives us.
4. Don't Underestimate Rest
This can be difficult for those of us who like to accomplish things!
God designed our bodies with a need for restoration. Sleep isn't wasted time, it’s when our body repairs and rejuvenates. And it isn’t all about sleeping. Even brief recesses from pushing during the day—time to stop and close our eyes, listen to music, read Scripture or have an uplifting conversation, can boost our body’s response to healing while reducing stress.
Rest isn't laziness. Sometimes rest is wisdom.
5. Pay Attention to What You're Feeding Your Mind
This became especially important to me during cancer.
Fear has a way of demanding our attention—a frightening diagnosis, a discouraging report, something we read, or someone else's story.
Faith doesn't mean pretending difficult circumstances don't exist. Faith decides which voice gets the final word.
Scripture tells us:
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." —2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
Ask yourself: What am I continually feeding my mind—fear or truth?
You may not control every thought that enters your mind, but you can decide which ones you nurture and believe.
6. Listen to the Words You're Speaking
I'm not suggesting that saying the right words magically makes sickness disappear. That's not biblical faith.
But I learned to speak God's truth over my circumstances—not because I was denying what doctors had told me, but because my diagnosis did not have greater authority in my life than God and His promises.
"For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."—Matthew 12:34 NKJV
What we continually speak can reveal where we're placing our trust.
7. Above Everything Else, Draw Near to God
You can eat perfectly, exercise faithfully, drink clean water, and take every supplement imaginable—and still miss the most important part.
You were created for relationship with God.
My cancer journey taught me many things about health, but its greatest lessons weren't about cancer. They were about my relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
There were things I could control and many things I couldn't. I learned to take responsibility for what I could—while entrusting the rest to God.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding..." —Proverbs 3:5 NKJV
We seek wisdom. We nourish our bodies. We guard our thoughts. We renew our minds with God's Word. We pray.
And then we trust Him.
Start With One Thing
If you're thinking, There are so many things I need to change! Don't become overwhelmed.
Start with one.
Drink more water. Take a walk. Add something nourishing to dinner. Turn off whatever is feeding you fear and open your Bible instead. Spend ten quiet minutes with the Lord. Go to bed earlier for more rest.
One healthy decision becomes another.
Looking back, I can see that my journey wasn't simply about overcoming cancer. God was teaching me how to live.
Your body responds to how you nourish and care for it. Your soul is affected by what you think, hear, and speak. And your spirit was created for fellowship with the One who made you. And it is the place where your faith originates for healing.
So, wherever you are today, begin there.
Do what you can. Ask God for wisdom. And take the next healthy step with Him.
Because Winning Over Cancer isn't simply about overcoming a disease. It's about learning to live—body, soul, and spirit—the way God intended. Learning to live in the body God created, and bringing it back into agreement with His design—brings healing.
