From Fear To Faith - Finding Your Footing
Updated: 6 days ago
I thought I had strong faith. After all, I had been a Christian most of my life. I'd witnessed God's faithfulness through countless challenges, watched Him answer prayers, and experienced His goodness firsthand.
But when I heard the words, "It's cancer," something happened that I wasn't prepared for.
Fear overwhelmed me.
Suddenly, everything I knew about God's promises seemed to collide with the reality of my diagnosis. I believed God could heal. I'd witnessed His healing power in the lives of others. But now it was me facing a life-threatening disease, and the question became intensely personal.
Would God heal me?
When What You Know and What You Feel Collide
Following surgery, I lay in my hospital bed struggling to comprehend what had happened. My doctor had recommended additional surgery, aggressive chemotherapy, and radiation. Without those treatments, he estimated I had only three to six months to live.
I was frightened, exhausted, and overwhelmed.
My husband, Dale, reminded me of God's promises. I knew those Scriptures. I believed them. Yet my emotions were speaking louder than what I knew to be true.
Have you ever experienced that?
You know what God's Word says, but your circumstances seem to shout something entirely different.
During those first difficult days, I discovered something important: Having faith doesn't mean you never experience fear. It means learning where to turn when fear comes.
Finding Solid Ground
I remember telling Dale that I felt as though I couldn't get my feet underneath me. Everything familiar had suddenly become uncertain.
I needed something solid to stand on.
Dale reminded me of a lesson he'd learned during his own recovery from a devastating airplane crash.
Romans 10:17 tells us:
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
That Scripture became especially meaningful to me.
I realized I couldn't strengthen my faith simply by wishing I had more of it. I needed to deliberately fill my mind and heart with God's Word.
I began searching for Bible promises, studying Scripture, and reminding myself of what God had said rather than continually rehearsing what frightened me. I wrote down every "Promise of God about healing" that I could find in the Bible, that ministered to me.
My circumstances hadn't immediately changed, but I was beginning to change.
Three Ways to Strengthen Your Faith During Difficult Times
1. Give God's Word more attention than your fears.
Fear grows when we continually rehearse frightening possibilities. Make time each day to read aloud, listen to, and meditate on Scripture. Allow God's promises to become more familiar than your worries.
2. Remember what God has already done.
During my cancer journey, I remembered Dale's extraordinary recovery and my mother's experience with breast cancer. Their testimonies encouraged me to trust God in my own circumstances.
Recall the times God has helped you through difficulties. His faithfulness in the past can strengthen your confidence today.
3. Take the next step in faith.
You don't have to understand everything about tomorrow to make a wise decision today. Pray, seek understanding, obtain sound counsel, and take the next step available to you.
Faith isn't passive—it is taking action based on what you believe. And what we believe influences how we think, speak, and act.

You Can Find Your Footing Again
Looking back, I realize that my journey toward healing involved much more than addressing my physical body. My thoughts, emotions, and spiritual life needed attention too.
That became a foundational part of what I now call the Body-Soul-Spirit approach.
If you're facing a frightening diagnosis or another overwhelming challenge, I encourage you to begin where I began.
Open God's Word. Find His promises. Give yourself time to grow stronger in faith.
Fear may be loud, but it doesn't have to have the final word.
