God’s Medicine Cabinet: The Remarkable Power Hidden in Herbs
Updated: Sep 24

What if some of the most fascinating substances being studied by scientists today have been growing around us all along?
God created an extraordinary plant kingdom—roots, leaves, bark, flowers, seeds and spices containing thousands of natural compounds. Long before scientists could identify those compounds, people around the world were using plants to support health and healing.
Scripture itself draws our attention to this remarkable provision:
“And God said, ‘See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth…’”—Genesis 1:29
And Ezekiel gives us this fascinating picture:
“…Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”—Ezekiel 47:12
Today, researchers are studying plant compounds for their effects on inflammation, immunity, metabolism, microbes—and even biological processes involved in cancer.
Herbs are powerful natural plants that can minister to us and help us heal. Because they are natural—God made—they cannot be patented. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry is unable to financially profit from them. This causes these natural healers to be “look down on” by the medical establishment, and promotion of their healing properties are suppressed.
Here are a few fascinating examples of the power in herbs.
Turmeric (Curcumin)
You may already have this one in your kitchen!
Turmeric contains curcumin, a natural compound extensively studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Researchers are also investigating how curcumin affects cellular signaling pathways involved in cancer growth and development.
Human research is ongoing, so curcumin has not yet been established as a cancer treatment. Still, this ordinary-looking spice has become the subject of extraordinary scientific interest.
Astragalus
Astragalus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Today, researchers are particularly interested in its potential effects on the immune system.
Studies have investigated compounds in astragalus for their immune-modulating properties and possible supportive role alongside conventional cancer care.
It is a wonderful example of how something as simple as a plant root can contain biologically active compounds that interact with the human body.
Berberine
Berberine is a bright-yellow natural compound found in several plants, including barberry and goldenseal.
Scientists have studied berberine for its possible effects on blood sugar, metabolism, inflammation and cellular function. Laboratory researchers have also investigated its activity against various cancer cells and it continues to attract considerable scientific interest.
Milk Thistle
For centuries, milk thistle has been associated with liver health. Its best-known collection of natural compounds is called silymarin.
Because our liver plays such an important role in processing substances entering the body, researchers have investigated whether milk thistle might help protect liver function, including during certain cancer treatments.
Cat’s Claw
This intriguing vine from Central and South America has traditionally been used for inflammatory and digestive conditions.
Scientists have discovered compounds in cat’s claw that may influence inflammation and certain immune functions. Although laboratory research has explored its potential effects on cancer cells, cat’s claw has not yet been proven to treat cancer in humans.
Sweet Wormwood
Sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) provides one of the most fascinating examples of medicine coming from a plant.
It contains artemisinin, the compound that became the foundation of highly effective modern treatments for malaria.
Researchers are now investigating artemisinin and related compounds for other potential applications, including their activity against cancer cells.
And There Are Many More
Scientists have investigated compounds found in echinacea, feverfew, red clover, skullcap, pau d’arco, sheep’s sorrel, wheatgrass and many other plants.
That brings us to an important truth:
Natural does not automatically mean safe if you are also taking medication.
Herbs contain biologically active substances. They can interact with medications and may even change how certain cancer drugs are absorbed or metabolized.
God filled this earth with an astonishing variety of plants containing substances capable of interacting with the wonderfully complex human body.
Thousands of years after Scripture spoke of “leaves for medicine,” scientists are still investigating the treasures hidden within the plant world.
We have only begun to discover what God placed there. The living plants that God gave for food and medicine are something we should pursue understanding and utilizing. G0d created us as living beings. He also created all that we need for life and health through living plants.
God bless,
