Today, let’s talk about joy.
What is it really? And how is it different from happiness?
Happiness is that warm feeling you experience when things are going well—when circumstances line up with your desires, when good news arrives, or when life feels easier. But happiness is emotional and temporary. It rises and falls depending on what is happening around you.
Joy, on the other hand, is something entirely different.
Joy is powerful. Joy is spiritual. Joy comes from God.
Happiness belongs to this natural world. Joy comes from the supernatural realm. And when you’re walking through something difficult—especially a health journey—you quickly realize how important that distinction is.
The Bible tells us in Nehemiah 8:10:
“…Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
This verse isn’t talking about surface-level happiness. It’s speaking of God’s kind of joy—the joy that comes from knowing Him, trusting Him, and resting in what He provides. That joy becomes your strength.
Not your circumstances. Not your diagnosis. Not what you feel in the moment.
The joy of the Lord is your strength.
And strength is something every one of us needs—especially when life feels heavy, uncomfortable or uncertain.
Where Does Real Joy Come From?
You might be asking, “But how do I get that kind of joy?”
It comes from the Word of God.
John 1:14 reminds us:
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”
That Word is Jesus. He is the Living Word.
When you accept Jesus into your life and begin planting God’s Word in your heart, joy becomes one of the byproducts that springs forth. It strengthens your spirit, refreshes your soul, and yes—it even impacts your body.
That’s why joy is so crucial.
You cannot live a life of victory without being strong in the Lord. And when God wants to make you strong, joy is one of the tools He uses.
Joy is not simply a state of mind. It isn’t positive thinking or pretending everything is okay. Joy is a very real spiritual force.
And Satan doesn’t have anything that can stand up against it.
Just as fear must yield to faith, discouragement must yield to joy.
Joy Is a Spiritual Force You Can Cultivate
Scripture tells us in Romans 15:13 (NKJV):
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Notice that joy comes as you believe—when you stay connected to God’s promises and allow the Holy Spirit to work within you.
Joy is also one of the fruits of the Spirit. That means if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you already have a measure of joy living inside you right now.
But like anything living, it must be cultivated.
You develop joy by speaking God’s Word over your life and circumstances. You strengthen it by living in agreement with His promises. You activate it by choosing faith when fear tries to take over.
Psalm 16:11 (NKJV) says:
“In Your presence is fullness of joy.”
Fullness of joy doesn’t come from perfect circumstances—it comes from God’s presence.
Choosing Joy in the Middle of the Storm
Here’s something important: joy is a choice.
That may sound simple, but it’s powerful.
Whatever circumstances you’re facing today, you can choose joy. You can choose to draw from the supply of the Holy Spirit within you. You can choose to stand on God’s Word even when your body feels weak or your emotions feel overwhelmed.
Joy doesn’t mean you deny reality.
It means you anchor yourself in a greater reality—God’s truth.
When you live in agreement with His Word regarding joy, you begin to experience the power and benefits of His Word. Those benefits include strength.
Strength to keep going. Strength to hope again. Strength to believe for healing. Strength to rise above fear.
Friend, if you are walking through cancer—or recovery—or any kind of health challenge—please hear this:
You are not powerless.
God has placed His Spirit inside you. His joy lives within you. And you can access it every single day.
So today, remind yourself:
The joy of the Lord is my strength.
Say it out loud if you need to. Let it settle into your heart. Let it lift your spirit. Let it renew your hope.
With God, nothing is impossible.
And His joy will help carry you through.
Standing in faith with you,
Paula
