Can Your Words Change Your Outcome?

Are Your Words Working Against Your Healing?

Have you ever stopped to think about how much your thoughts and words may be affecting your life?

God created us as three-part beings—body, soul and spirit. And if we want to experience true healing and wholeness, we cannot ignore any part of who we are.

Your soul—your mind, will and emotions—is especially important because it is where you process information, make decisions, experience emotions and choose what you will believe.

And that makes your soul a battleground.

YOU ARE IN A BATTLE

Many Christians don't realize they are in a spiritual battle. And even when they do, they may not understand how to fight effectively.

My husband, Dale, had to fight after surviving an airplane crash and being told he would never walk again. He fought spiritually through prayer and faith—but he also put his faith into action.

I had to do the same when I was diagnosed with cancer and given only 3–6 months to live.

I believed in healing. But I also knew I had to fight the good fight of faith and use the weapons God has made available to His children.

The Bible tells us:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds... bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”  — 2 Corinthians 10:4–5

Notice where much of this battle takes place:

In your thoughts.

What are you allowing yourself to think about all day? Fear? The diagnosis? What might go wrong? What someone said to you? Or are you bringing those thoughts into agreement with what God says?

It’s powerful to understand that thoughts are the beginning of our words. We don’t speak unless we’ve thought the thought already. So, if we need to “cut our words off at the pass,” we need to become very aware of our thoughts and manage those first.

Be aware that our thoughts can come from ourselves or the enemy. The Bible tells us what to do with our thoughts in the Scripture above:

“... bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”  — 2 Corinthians 10:4–5

If a thought does not align with God’s Word and His promises, we pull it down and replace it with something that does agree with what God has said. This is the heart of the battle.

YOU WERE MADE IN GOD’S IMAGE

Jesus (who is God) created the worlds and entire universe in HIS image.

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” — Genesis 1:27

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” — Hebrews 11:3

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. “For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.” — Psalms 33:6,9

The power of the spoken word is creative. Mankind, who is created in God’s image, has the power to create through the spoken word too.

YOUR WORDS HAVE POWER

Your thoughts don't usually stay thoughts. Eventually, they become words.

And Scripture has a great deal to say about our words as well:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”  — Proverbs 18:21

Jesus Himself said:

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”  — Mark 11:23

That is powerful!

When you take control of your thoughts and words and bring them into agreement with God's Word, you are changing the direction and outcome of your life.

This doesn't mean you will never say the wrong thing. We all do. But when you catch yourself speaking fear, defeat or something contrary to God's Word—stop. Repent. Correct it. And get right back on track.

AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT WITH WORDS

Years ago, Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto became known for experiments in which he claimed that words, music and prayer affected the appearance of crystals formed from frozen water.

Emoto photographed water crystals after exposing samples to different words and influences. He reported that positive words and prayer were associated with more symmetrical, beautiful formations, while negative influences produced distorted, non-symmetrical formations.

Whether or not you accept Emoto's conclusions, the images are fascinating to see.

Watch this short 3-minute video showing examples of the water crystals:

Now think about something much more important:

What are you speaking over yourself every day?

You are made up of at least 70% water. So, what’s happening inside your cells when you speak? Is it good or bad?

What are you repeatedly saying about your health, your future, your family and your circumstances?

WHAT ARE YOU AGREEING WITH?

God tells us:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” — Proverbs 18:21

So ask yourself:

Do I spend more time talking about what is wrong and what I am afraid of—or about what God’s Word says and what I believe God is doing?

Paul gives us clear direction in his letter to the Philippians:

“Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely... if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”  — Philippians 4:8

God isn't trying to make life difficult by telling us how to think and speak.

He's showing us how to live… and live abundantly.

We have to renew our minds, guard our hearts and bring our thoughts and words into agreement with Him.

So today, notice your thoughts and listen to yourself speak.

What are you thinking?

What are you saying?

What are you agreeing with?

Choose thoughts that agree with God's truth. Speak words of faith and life. And never forget—death and life are in the power of the tongue. Use that power carefully.

With love and blessings,

Paula Black
