Why Being Hard on Yourself Is Keeping You Stuck

One of the biggest changes I made… was learning to stop fighting myself.
That might sound simple — but for me, it changed everything.
During my healing journey, I was trying to change so many things at once. My diet, my habits, my thoughts, my routines. I wanted to do it all — and do it right.
But along the way, I noticed something I hadn’t really seen before.
I was being incredibly hard on myself.
Critical.
Frustrated.
Constantly aware of what I wasn’t doing well enough.
And I believed that pressure would help me change.
When Pressure Keeps You Stuck
I thought if I pushed myself harder… I would finally break through.
But instead, the opposite happened.
The more pressure I put on myself, the more stuck I felt.
Instead of moving forward, I felt discouraged. Tired. Even defeated at times.
Because no matter how much I tried, it never felt like enough.
And deep down, that kind of thinking wasn’t producing life—it was draining it.
Seeing God Differently
Then something began to shift.
I started paying closer attention to how God was relating to me.
And what I realized surprised me.
He wasn’t treating me the way I was treating myself.
He wasn’t impatient.
He wasn’t constantly pointing out everything I was doing wrong.
He wasn’t pressuring me to perform.
Instead… He was leading me gently.
Patiently.
Lovingly.
But I had to slow down to see it.
A New Way to Move Forward
That’s when I began asking myself a simple but powerful question:
“What if I treated myself with that same grace?”
Not lowering my standards.
Not ignoring the changes that needed to happen.
But changing the way I approached them.
And that’s when something remarkable happened.
Real progress began.
Grace Creates Growth
When I stopped fighting myself… I started moving forward.
Instead of being driven by pressure, I was supported by grace.
Instead of feeling like I had to force change, I began to walk in it—step by step.
With peace.
With patience.
With hope.
That didn’t mean the journey was always easy.
It didn’t mean there weren’t still things I needed to work through.
But my perspective had changed.
And that changed everything else.
Your Identity Changes Everything
At the root of it all was something even deeper:
Identity.
I had to begin seeing myself the way God sees me.
Not as someone constantly falling short…
But as someone deeply loved.
Cared for.
Walked with—every single day.
When you understand that your identity is rooted in Him, everything shifts.
You’re no longer striving to earn worth.
You’re living from a place of being loved.
And from that place, real, lasting change becomes possible.
Strength in Weakness
There were still moments when I felt weak.
Moments when I didn’t have it all together.
But instead of seeing that as failure, I began to see it differently.
Scripture reminds us of 2 Corinthians 12:9:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
That means even in the areas where you feel weakest… God’s strength is available to you.
Not after you’ve figured everything out.
But right in the middle of it.
You Don’t Have to Fight Yourself
If you’ve been hard on yourself…
If you’ve felt stuck…
If you’ve believed that pressure is the only way forward…
I want to gently tell you:
You don’t have to fight yourself to move forward.
You can walk this out in God’s grace.
With patience.
With peace.
With the quiet confidence that He is leading you—step by step.
And as you begin to see yourself the way He does…
You’ll discover something beautiful:
Hope begins to rise.
Healing begins to deepen.
And forward movement becomes possible again.
Standing in faith with you,
