The Small Steps That Began to Restore My Health

by Paula Black

After realizing that my body had not failed me—but had been trying to get my attention—I knew I couldn’t ignore it any longer.

But I also knew something else… I didn’t have all the answers.

And if I’m being honest, I felt a little overwhelmed at first. There was so much information, so many opinions, and so many voices telling me what I “should” do.

So I made a decision.

I wouldn’t try to fix everything overnight.

Instead, I would begin with small, simple steps.

The first thing I started paying attention to was water.

It sounds almost too simple. But in realizing how dehydrated I had been for years, I started drinking more clean water—consistently, throughout the day. And I cut out the caffeine—which dehydrates.

Nothing extreme. Just intentional.

And over time, I could feel a difference.

Then I began looking at what I was putting into my body.

I started choosing foods that would support my body, rather than just satisfy cravings. Mostly I had been living off of empty calories rather than nutrient rich foods.

It was about giving my body what it needed to function, the way God designed it to.

Little by little, those choices began to add up.

I also had to face a deeper problem… Stress.

Not just the busy kind—but the internal kind. The thoughts I carried. The tension I had learned to live with. It was so familiar I hardly noticed.

And this part wasn’t as easy.

But I began, slowly, to bring those things before the Lord. And release what I could not control.

I didn’t do this perfectly. I’m still learning.

But even small moments of peace began to make a difference.

One step at a time, I started working with my body instead of against it.

And I began to see something I hadn’t expected…

My body started responding.

Not instantly. But gradually… faithfully.

It reminded me of something Scripture says:

“He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.”—Psalm 107:20 (NKJV)

That verse encouraged me.

Not because everything changed overnight—but because it reminded me that healing is often a process… and that God is present in every step of it.

I also held onto this promise:

“But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength…”—Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

And that word renew became very meaningful to me.

Not replace. Not rush.

Renew.

Strength returned… little by little.

I began to see that my role was not to force healing—but to create an environment where healing could begin.

And to support what God had already designed my body to do.

While I still had much to learn, one truth became clear:

Small, consistent choices… matter more than I ever realized.

As these small changes became part of my daily life, I started to notice something even deeper…

It wasn’t just my body that was changing.

My thinking was changing. My outlook was changing. Even my faith was growing in ways I hadn’t expected.

And that opened the door to another important part of my journey…learning how the mind, the body, and the spirit are more connected than I had ever understood before.

I didn’t change everything at once. I just started small—and kept going. And that changed everything.

Standing in faith with you,

Paula Black
